Ciao, Gorazd !

The longtime SCIJ member Gorazd Vesel has died at the age of 88 in Gorizia, Italy. He worked for the Primorski Dnevnik, the daily newspaper of the Slovene minority in Italy.

For twelve years he was its editor-in-chief. He was a passionate sailor and a passionate skier. He was very proud of his several Vesel with his SCIJ medalsSCIJ medals and liked to indulge in the rather common SCIJ weakness of proclaiming oneself “world champion”. His name means “cheerful” in Slovene and he was a cheerful person indeed. He never talked about his detention in a German lager during WW2. He had the gift of being able to enjoy the present, so much so that he became well-known for his forgetfulness. He was apparently very good at loosing tickets and passports. With a rather daring geographical move the Italian team gave him the nickname “Carpathian Eagle”. May he fly forever over the mountains and in the wind he loved so much.
